How To Care For Metal Sculptures

WHAT ARE METAL SCULPTURES MADE OF?

Most metal sculptures are made of Corten Steel (rusty looking metal) and Stainless Steel (Shiny looking metal) – Some details on the sculptures are made of patinated brass or copper. See picture below.

WHY CLEANING/POLISHING IS NECESSARY?

Let’s be clear with this, Corten Steel is basically maintenance FREE. Bird droppings and other contaminants could appear, but these can be safely removed with warm water or a high pressure waterjet. That’s all you need to do.

When it comes to Stainless Steel, is a different story.  Stainless steel actually stains (OMG), sorry for the bad news. So stains can appear as tea stains, discolouration, bluing, mild rust and corrosion. All of these can be easily removed using Autosol Metal Polish . On the other hand, if you are as fuzzy as we are, you’d like to see your sculpture nice and shiny year round, so for this purpose, and to maintain the sculpture without needing to polish it again, the best product to use would be  Autosol Multi-Purpose Cleaner. It is very simple to apply, clean and wipe off.

TIPS:

  • The most important aspect to consider is using a soft cloth, rug, sponge, and not to apply much pressure, just the necessary to polish and remove all the greyish residue.
  • Residue: You will notice a greyish residue coming up on the cloth, which is perfectly fine as you are removing a very thin layer of the metal.
  • Do not let the paste dry. Always work on small areas at the time, and don’t let dry.
